Mind Riders: visor up, and we talk about anxiety
On 25 July in Sibiu, riders lift their visors so the talk about mental health can finally start. What the "Visor Up" ride is, why a motorcycle event matters for anxiety, and what to take from it even if you never ride.
On 25 July 2026, in the heart of Sibiu, motorcyclists lift their visors to speak openly about something we stay silent about far too often: mental health. The "Visor Up" ride, organised by Mind Riders together with Hoinari MF, starts from a hard fact: one in two young people in Romania say they have struggled with anxiety or depression in recent months. Here is what the event is about, and why a gesture as small as lifting a visor matters well beyond the riding community.
What "Visor Up" is
Mind Riders, an initiative by Riders for Hope, together with Hoinari MF, is bringing Romania its first motorcycle event built around mental health, in the spirit of Germany's Fellows Ride and Australia's Black Dog Ride. On 25 July in Sibiu, riders, volunteers and families gather in the city centre to talk openly about mental health. The message is plain: "Silence claims more lives than the road." The organisers keep no money for themselves; they connect people directly with mental-health organisations, transparently and without any cut.
Why a motorcycle event matters for anxiety
Riding culture prizes self-reliance: you fix your own bike, you read the road yourself, you cope. That is exactly the mindset that keeps anxiety silent, and it is not limited to riders. The mind that will not switch off, the unease before a long ride or a hard day, the feeling that you have to manage it alone. When a community famous for toughness stops in a city square and says these things out loud, it gives everyone else permission to do the same. Something said with the visor up, in front of friends, carries further than any campaign slogan.
What to take from it, even if you never ride
You do not need a motorcycle to borrow the idea. Lifting the visor can be as small as naming what is happening ("my thoughts are racing again"), telling one person you trust, or asking a friend how they really are and waiting for the honest answer. Anxiety loses part of its grip the moment it stops being a secret. That is the whole mechanism behind the event, and it works on any ordinary Tuesday too.
